If you are worried you are being followed then there are some tried and tested methods to detect if you are under surveillance.
1) Driving three sides of a square (either three lefts or three rights)
When in your vehicle and providing it is safe to do so, take a moment to observe the vehicles that are behind you. It may not take too long a glance in the rear view mirror depending on the traffic. Now, take either a left or right turn at the next junction. Note that whatever turn you take you will need to repeat for this method to be effective. You will be taking three turns in the this method and they will all have to be either left or right turns in succession. Once the first turn has been made take another look and see what vehicles are behind you. There may be some that were there before. Now take another turn. Again, this could be either left or right depending on which way you turned at the first junction. Once the second turn has been made take a look in the rear view mirror and see if there are any of the same vehicles behind you. If you spot a vehicle that was there since the beginning of this method it may still be a coincidence. Take one final turn at the next junction. Again, you will want to keep it as a left turn if that is what you have been doing so far. Once the final turn has been made take another look in your rear view. If there is a vehicle that has been behind you throughout the three successive turns then it is highly likely you are under surveillance. You need to safely pull over either in a parking lot or whatever designated space is available and wait for the vehicle to pass you. Make a mental note of this vehicle. Remain in your vehicle and observe what transpires. Now, this is not to say this vehicle is certainly following you. There could be a plausible explanation as to why it has followed you through three turns of a square. However, this will help give you an idea and a possible vehicle to watch out for.
2) Head to an uncrowded area
This is more for when you are on foot. Within a crowd it is extremely difficult to spot somebody following you. If for whatever reason you are suspicious you are being followed then head to an uncrowded area with big wide open spaces or maybe a store that is not too busy. Take a moment and observe the people around you. On the other hand, Libraries are particularly useful in this regard due to the many bookshelves and turnings within these locations. Somebody following will have to significantly close the gap as to not lose you.
3) Metro / Public transport
Waiting on the platform or at the bus station. Take a mental note of the people around you who are also waiting to board. Do not get on. Hang back and see who is left. Then repeat this procedure several times. If there is somebody that is also waiting besides yourself and has let several trains come and go then you board the next one and see if they follow suit.
4) Extra laps around traffic circles/roundabouts
Do not turn off and instead go around a few times and observe if another vehicle is doing the same.
5) Elevators
When on foot enter an office building, hotel etc… and make towards the elevator. Get on board and exit on a mid level floor. Once you have exited, wait again outside for the next elevator and take the next one going up to the top. Repeat this step and take the subsequent elevator to the bottom. It will be very difficult for somebody to follow you unless they have remained in the lobby.
6) Become a Sunday driver
Drive like it’s a lazy Sunday afternoon and you are in no rush to get anywhere. This will help you take account of vehicles behind you. A lot of them will want to overtake.
7) Don’t be predictable
Change up your routine, change your routes.
