Whether it be for a suspected cheating spouse or a dubious worker’s comp claim there are similarities in the approach.
RESEARCH
Knowledge is power as they say and certainly on a surveillance case. The first thing you will want to do is to research your subject and the area you will be working in. Thankfully in this day and age we have access to some wonderful online tools. Google Maps being a great resource will allow you to view also in street and satellite view. A word of warning though, the street view is usually out of date and may have been recorded several years ago. The satellite footage is usually very recent. You will be able to see the layout of the area and note any possible obstructions, places of interest and routes the subject will most likely take when leaving their residence. Also, it will help you determine where you are going to set up. Remember, it is not just the subject that can become suspicious. In today’s world of Ring doorbells and neighborhood apps it has become very easy for people to spot suspicious vehicles in their neighborhoods. Hence, you will want to park up in a spot that will not arouse suspicion after several hours of remaining there as you wait for your subject to appear.
Also, being a licensed private investigator will enable me access to some wonderful databases such as TLO. From here I can access address records, vehicle records and data on family members and their addresses. Also, speaking with the client will help draw up a picture of any routines and behaviors on your subject. Especially in infidelity cases. The spouse will be a great knowledge bank for knowing how the subject thinks and behaves in addition to risk assessments. For example, if they are driving slow or continuously changing direction it may not be because they suspect you are following them. They may just have a habit of getting distracted easily or prefer to drive with caution.
Then there is the world of social media. Does the subject have a Facebook page? Instagram? Snapchat? It is always a good idea to have a recent photo of what they look like.
SETTING UP
Now you have an idea where you are going to set up your observation point and who your subject is. Surveillance is an art and not a science. Therefore, you have to be in the best possible mindset to ensure a successful assignment. Following someone is easier said than done. Remember, it is better to lose the subject rather than get burned and put your client in an embarrassing situation. Having a good idea of the possible routes the subject will take and their driving behavior will increase the chances of a successful assignment.
This is a brief summary of how AFR Investigations prepares for a surveillance assignment. During consultation with the client we will build a clear picture of the case and be in the best possible situation for a successful outcome.
