It’s an intriguing profession in many ways. When you first begin, your duties include serving process papers for divorces, delivering subpoenas for court appearances, and investigating workers’ compensation claims where someone may be pretending to have an injury to collect disability benefits. In my case, i also perform investigations for criminal defense. These can range from murder to human trafficking.

A significant part of the job involves waiting for someone to take action—whether it’s leaving their home or driving away—and that’s when the real thrill begins. Your heart races, and your nerves are on edge; you want to keep track of the target without getting caught. At the same time, you’re documenting your observations into a tape recorder, noting their movements—what streets they travel, where they stop, and where they go next. You also take videos during the process. And on the other side of the coin with criminal defense investigations, there requires a whole lot more research based work as you review discovery and follow up on missing leads that can help the client.
